Professional Career Day Inspires Young Women

ABC News

The Women in ABC hosted its annual ‘Professional Career Day’ for 30 young women from Harford Tech and Woodlawn High School at Southway Builders’ working jobsite, John Ruhrah Elementary School.

The day began with female speakers from the industry who highlighted career opportunities such as architecture, engineering, construction management and ABC Greater Baltimore’s apprenticeship program. Several guest speakers, including Debra Mirable, owner of DSM Contracting; Kirston Graves, ABC’s apprenticeship coordinator; Malindi Lankatilleke project manager at Southway Builders; Charlie Lindemore superintendent with MCN Build; and Stacey Lioriesis with MCN Build, explained their roles in the construction industry and relation to the project.

The teams from MCN Build and Southway Builders took the young women on an interactive tour of the project where they learned about the project’s budget and scheduling, the urban landscape considerations/challenges and the design parameters. Once the tours commenced, the young women broke into groups and put their new knowledge to use with an estimating activity led by Shelly Hutson with Southway Builders.

To wrap up the day, Olivia D’Ovidio with Southway Builders conducted a 360-camera demonstration which was followed by a drone demonstration led by Dominick Dunnigan.

At the end of the day, the WABC women discussed the scholarship opportunity the committee awards young women interested in pursuing a career in construction.

Some special thanks go out to the Southway Builders team, the MCN Build team, WABC Chair Bonnie Cronin with Harkins Builders, the WABC Committee for organizing the event and being involved.
